Csoóri Sándor: Remembering the old street (Emlékezés egy régi utcára Angol nyelven)

Csoóri Sándor portréja

Emlékezés egy régi utcára (Magyar)

Kis görbe utca:
eldobott dinnyeszelet.
Köveid: fekete magok,
elleptek a legyek.

Zsinagógád homloka:
kitömött borjú homloka.

Kis zsidóid pajesza göndör,
laskát lapít sovány kezük,
nincs áruházuk, csak istenük,
szél hátán jöttek Betlehemből.

Ki látta Mózest kócszakállal?
Minden éjszaka erre jár,
vizet fakaszt a kövekből,
vizet fakaszt a falakból
s járdád hajnalra csupa sár.

Kedvetlenségem rádtekint,
tűnődő szemem hátranéz,
zsidóleányka köszön vissza,
szeme hatágú rettegés.

Egy szalmaszál most fölrepül,
elevenek látjátok-e?
A kis zsidólány sárga csontja
repül a sárga semmibe.

Anyjához száll: zöld gáz az űrben,
apjához száll: lámpaernyő a Holdon,
öccséhez száll: négyszögű, száraz szappan
egy túlvilági kirakatban.

Kis utca, kis utca, Európa
mákszem utcája, fekete
saradban a halál nyomát
gyöngülő szemmel látod-e?

Elköltözöm belőled mindörökre,
csak emlékeim hagyom itt:
szélmalom-fáid majd megőrlik,
madaraid majd fölzabálják.

Remembering the old street (Angol)

Crooked little street:
a discarded melon-slice.
Your cobbles: black seeds,
and everywhere the flies.

Your synagogue's front, its brow…
a stuffed calf's it could be, that brow.

Forelocks of small Jews with curls on them,
thin hands flatten flat matzo more,
they have god, but no department store,
came riding the wind from Bethlehem.

Who saw Moses with his tussled beard?
He walks around here every night,
from stone, he brings the water forth
from walls, he brings the water forth:
muddies your paths when dawn brings the light.

My listlessness... It notes you there,
my wondering eyes glance to the rear,
a Jewish lass returns my greeting:
her eyes: a hexagram of fear.

A strand of straw takes to the air,
you, who live, do you see the sight?
The yellow bones of a Jewish lass
fly to the yellow, empty night.

She flies to her mother: green gas in space,
She flies to her father: lamp-shade on the moon,
flies to her brother: dry square soap, it lies
displayed in hereafter's window in the skies.

You, tiny street, tiny street of Europe,
you are but poppy-seed in size,
in your black mud, with fading sight,
do you see the spoors of your demise?

I'll leave, move away from you for evermore,
memories only will remain:
your windmill-trees will grind them to feed,
soon, birds of yours will devour them.
