Radnóti Miklós: Love cycle from 1927-28 (Szerelmi ciklus 1927-28-ból Angol nyelven)

Radnóti Miklós portréja

Láttad?

Ma éjjel szomorúfűz akadt
az útunkba és oly szomorún
könnyezett ki a fekete és
lázas udvarból, hogy félősen,
sejtőn megremegett a testünk

Láttad?

Amikor reggel arra mentünk,
a nap az ablakra költözött
és ragyogni akart, de a fűz,
fejével elébe borult és
elfojtotta a ragyogását.

Láttad?

Ez a gyászos, furcsalombú fa
minket sirat, két csókot, amely
összeakadt és most szakadni
készül a könnyesen ragyogó
mindentlátó, szent ablak alatt.

Reichenberg, 1928. február 25

Néha a fiadnak érzem magam,
ki lopva nézi vetkőző anyját
és csodalátó szeme kicsillan
kamaszévei unt undorából
és beléd szeret.
És beléd szeret
a testedet látva.

Néha a fiadnak érzem magam
amikor csókolsz a homlokomon
és mikor én bűnös borzalommal
az ajkaidon csókollak vissza
mert úgy szeretlek.
Mert úgy szeretlek
és az enyém vagy.

Néha a fiadnak érzem magam,
feslett és szerelmes rossz fiadnak,
mert hideg és bűnös éjszakákon
a melleden nyugszik el a fejem
csókjaink után.
Csókjaink után
én jó kedvesem

Reichenberg, 1928. május 22

Homlokom a gyenge széltől ráncolt
tenger oly közelnek tetsző végtelenje
és szőke édesvizeknek
hullámos áradata a hajam,
mely a halánték körül zuhataggal
omlik homlokom fodros tengerébe
és látomásos, felhős egeknek
zöld tükre két nagy tágratárt szemem,
két összetapadt ajkam pedig
korsója ízes, titkos szavaknak
és fogaim fehér szűrőjén át
szitálva hullik le rátok
a keserű és az édes,
a mézszavú áldás és az átok.

És Te néha a tenger végtelenjét
simítod végig a tenyereddel,
belebámulva a látomásos
felhős egekbe és hullámos
szőke vizekben fürdeted meg
az ujjaidat és ilyenkor
mind e gazdagság csak a Tiéd
és csak Terád hullik ilyenkor
minden ízes áldás és átok.

Reichenberg, 1928. január 18

Sok szerelmes éjszakán égették
tested dombjai az arcom bőrét
és sok éjszakán égette gyulladt
arcom a tested érzékeny bőrét...
akkor csak ez az izzás volt, ez a
sötét nagy izzás és hogy messze vagy,
most fojtott illatát is érzem a
szerelmünknek...
jázmin illatuk volt az éjeknek,
a tested is jázmint lehelt, mint a
fehérvirágú bokrok, tavaszi
fülledt éjszakán...
de elmúlt, elmúltak a lihegő
csókok, melyek párája most tudom,
hogy jázmint lehelt és hogyha később
tavasszal érinteni akarom
a tested, vagy csókolni akarom
a szájad, csak egy fehér virágra
kell hajtanom emlékező fejem
és egy bokor illatát kell mélyre
szívnom és ujra itt vagy és ujra
megölelem fehér, dombos tested,
amelyen annyiszor pihent elfáradt,
szegény, ejtett fejem...

Budapest, 1927. december 24

Ilyenkor, így összeveszés után
oly új vagy nekem és még annyira
ujra szép
és meglátok rajtad mindent ujra,
a testedet, a tested zenéjét,
és lépteid dalát, ahogy felém
jössz a kis ucca sarkán...
és szájad ujra oly piros és
a fogaid is ujra csillogók,
s a szemeid is ujra bámulom,
a szemeid, amelyeket láttam
farsangi reggel felém kacagni
és késő őszi estén, pilláin
remegő könnyel
és láttam a kéjtől félig lehunyva
kifényesedni...
és most ujra látom, hogy hív a szemed
és felém zenél várón a tested,
felém, akit nem várnak és nem vártak
soha, sehol és én sem várok, mert
egyszer hívtak és én nem mentem és
azóta megfogott egy átok...

Reichenberg, 1928. január 12

Hóval borított fehér dombokon keresztül
kísértelek sok sok éjen át és egybefont
karunkon áradt széjjel testünkben a meleg...
a hó világított és amikor megálltunk
csókolózni, fekete folt maradt talpunk
alatt...
Ilyenkor szétszakítottuk úgy összetapadt
ajkainkat, egymásra néztünk és a szűz hó
csillant meg halálos ijedtség könnyével
befutott, szerelmesen fénylő szemeinkben...
Könnyű léptekkel suhantunk tovább, nehogy új
csókkal túrjuk fel a havat és kivirítson
a fekete föld, minden szerelmeknek réme...
Aznap éjjel a felhők hangtalanul suhantak,
aznap a fehér dombokon nem csókolództak.

Reichenberg, 1927. november 15

A Mosolynak barnafényű kenyerét harapdáltad
a fogaiddal és szerteszaladó morzsáiból
gyúrtál csillogó, szépszínű fürge Kacajgolyókat
két nagy ajkad megfeszült villogó fogaidon, de
   jaj
görbüléséből már kivirágzott a Sírás bodros-
virágú fája és mintha egy kis repedésből vér
szaladt volna végig a Kacagás kenyerének hó-
fehér testén és már fogaid közül is bodrosan
szaladt ki a Sírás, felkúszva és pergő, remegő
könnybimbóival körülvirágozva szemeidet,
   amelyek ablakán
      láttam
érett a Bánat dagadó kovásza.

Reichenberg, 1928. június 16

Ölelkezésünk közben
   jaj
elszakadt a gyöngysorod
   és
mint könnycseppek peregtek
sírva a forró párnák
ráncain a csillogó
      gyöngyök.

      Lásd,
úgy peregtek a gyöngyök
ahogyan néha könnyek
között lihegő testünk
bőrén pereg a harmat
elfáradt dalát zengve
            egy
         ölelésre
      emlékezésnek.

Látod,
nem vigyáztál és a
szerelem gyöngye
szakadt le rólad
a csókok után.

Reichenberg-Budapest, 1928. július 3

Nyujtóztál tegnap a kályha előtt
s melled dombjai feszítették
a ruhát, ahogyan hátradőlve,
félig lehúnyt szemmel melengetted
szép kezeidet a kályha falán...
a tűz fénye megvilágította
a lábaidat és ropogott a
hátad mint macskáé, amikor
elnyújtja testét a tűz előtt és
bársonyos négy lábának elrejtett
karmai csikorogva vájnak a
fényes padlóba...
a te cipőid is csikorogtak
mert te is macska vagy és szeretem
megcsókolni a melleid fölött
feszülő ruhát, melyen átárad
felémnyújtózó testednek kába,
izomfeszítő, langyos melege.

Budapest, 1927. december 28

10

Vetkőztél tegnap az ablak előtt
a beszürődő lila fényben
kacagtak az árnyad vonalai
és a megfagyott, könnyes holdsarló
babonás arany kalapként, remegőn
koszorúzta meg a hajadat...

Hallod, a fal mögül a szomszédban
valahol gramofon zenél egy régi
volgaparti, bús melódiát és
az óra nyögi kinn az éjfelet...

Hagyd ott az ablakot, az aranyos
holdas kalapot és dobd a ruhát
a hallgató, fekete székre
és a meztelenséged add nekem.

Reichenberg, 1928. február 7

11

Nem szeretlek már,
megindult a föld és csillag hull az égről,
de nem azért mert csilaghullás hava van,
hanem mert lehullott homlokodról is egy
annyi magányos éjjelen szőtt glória:
a szerelmem,
ne csodálkozz, látod nem szeretlek többé
és az ég is könnyezik,
ugy-e megijedtél most is, hogy ráhullott
ijedt szőkeséged közt egy esőcsepp
az arcodra, pedig csak az eső esik
és hidd el hogy vége;
és ezt a szerelmet siratja az ég is.
Ne félj,
csak egy levél hullott a lábam elé, mint
ahogy most már a szerelmed is lehull...
Nézd már, beborult és hogy esik az eső.

Reichenberg, 1927. november 7

12

Az illatod bolondja voltam,
úgy hajtottam hozzád a fejem,
mint télen illatos, idegen
párás virágokhoz, amelyek
japán vázában remegnek egy
alkonyuló szobának asztalán
és az illatuk a nyárról mesél.

Oly vigyázva, halkan csókoltam
meg az ajkad, hogy szirmod ne hulljon
és sokáig megmaradj nekem,
de hiába, az illatod elszállt
és én egy régi parfőmnek fájó
emlékét hegedülöm el most
emlékezőn a papiroson.

Reichenberg, 1928. február 21

13

Fehér gyöngysort vettem a nyakadra
és amikor megcsókoltál érte
nekem szemem elé futott a pult
mögött gyöngyöket mutogató
alázatos kereskedő, amint
árúit dicsérve kínálgatta
a szépencsillogó gyöngysorokat.
Én ezt a kis fehérszemüt válasz-
tottam, pedig volt drágább is, szebb is,
olyan, amilyent te érdemelnél.
És amikor megcsókoltál érte,
eszembejutott, hogy vajjon jobban
öleltél volna, hogyha csillogóbb,
szebb, nagyobbszemű gyöngyöt csavarok
szépséges díszül a nyakad köré...
Te!
Nem méred te ki gyöngyök árával
az ajkadnak és ölednek tüzét...?

Reichenberg, 1928. május 9

14

Szakítottunk.
Te véresre csókoltad a számat
és lihegve kértél, hogy maradjak.
Nem maradok.
Menj be szépen, én meg elindulok
a mérföldkövek között a sárban.
Mit nézel?
A hófehér éjek után ugy-e
könnyező, foltos olvadás szakadt.
Hallod?
A vézna fákban a nyarat
siratják most korhadt, téli szentek.
Ne sírj.
A könnytől csunya lesz a szemed
és nem bírom folytatni, ha könnyezel.
Hallod-e?
Szél szánkázik zúgva a dombokon
és itt te előtted fodros a sár.
Megértettél?
Sár. Sár és Gyűlölet van az alján
minden csillogó, nagy szerelemnek.
Most menj.
Érzem, hogy imádlak és gyűlöllek
és ezért most itthagylak az úton.
Kedvesem.
Nagyon, nagyon szeretlek és hogyha
találkozunk, talán ujra kezdem.
Menj már.

Love cycle from 1927-28 (Angol)

1

Did you see?

This evening we came across
a weeping willow along our way,
and it shed its tears so sadly
from that dark and fevered yard,
that it made our bodies tremble.

Did you see?

When we passed again next morning,
the sun had moved to the window
and wanted to shine, but the willow
leant with its head in front of it
and took its shine away.

Did you see?

This doleful tree with its odd foliage
mourns us, mourns the two kisses, which
had united and now prepare to part
beneath that tearfully shining,
all-seeing holy window.

Reichenberg, February 28, 1928.

2

Sometimes I feel like your son,
who stealthily watches his mother undress,
whose miracle-seeing eye begins to sparkle
through the bored disgust of his adolescent years
and falls in love with you.
On seeing your body,
falls in love with you.

Sometimes I feel like your son
when you're kissing my brow,
and when I, with guilty horror,
return the kiss on your lips
because I love you so.
Because I love you so
and you are mine.

Sometimes I feel as if I were your son
your bad, loose, loving son,
because on cold and sinful nights,
my head finds its rests on your bosom
after our kisses.
After our kisses,
fair love of mine.

Reichenberg, May 22, 1928

The hair on my brow is like the wind-chopped
seemingly near endlessness of the sea
and the wavy sweep of
fair freshwater streams, which
cascade by the temples
into the rippled sea of my brow,
and my two large, wide-open eyes are
green mirrors of the clouded skies of vision,
my closed lips the pitcher
of fine, secret words which
through the white strainer of my teeth
drizzles onto you
the bitter and the sweet:
those honeyed blessings and curses.

And sometimes you smoothen with your palm
the endlessness of seas
whilst staring into those clouded skies of vision
and bathe your fingers in
wavy blonde waters,
and at times like these
all this wealth is only yours
and all fine blessings and curses,
fall upon you only.

Reichenberg, January 18, 1928

4

The hillocks of your body had burnt
the skin of my face through many a love-filled night,
and through many a night my flushed face
burned the tender skin of your body…
back then there was only this glow,
this great, dark glow, and that you were far away,
now I also feel the subdued fragrance
of our love…
the nights had a jasmine fragrance,
your body, too, had a breath of jasmine,
like those white-blossomed shrubs
on sultry nights in spring…
but it ended, the panting kisses
had ended, the scent of which, I now know,
was that of jasmine, and if
later in the spring I want to touch
your body, or kiss
your lips, I only need to bend
my remembering head toward
a white blossom and deeply breathe in
the scent of that shrub for you to be here,
and I once more embrace the hills of your body
on which my tired, poor, bent head
so often found its rest.

Budapest, December 24, 1927

5

At times like these, after quarrels,
you are so new, and so
beautiful to me still,
and I see all your qualities anew
your body and the music that it plays
the song of your steps as you come
towards me on the corner of the little street…
and your lips are so red again
and your teeth so gleaming,
and I stare at your eyes again,
your eyes which I saw laughing
towards me at a carnival one morning
and with trembling teardrops
on their lashes on a late autumn evening,
and saw them brighten, half closed
with pleasure…
and now I see again how your eyes call me
and how your body plays its music as it waits,
for me, for whom no one waits or ever
waited, and I, too, am not waiting,
for once they did call me and I never went
and a curse had held me since…

Reichenberg, January 12, 1928

6

Through many a night I led you
over white, snow covered hills, and warmth
flooded in our bodies on intertwined arms…
The snow was bright and when we stopped
to kiss, a black patch was left
beneath our feet…
At times like this we tore apart our stuck-together lips,
looked at each other, and the virgin snow
glistened in our loving, shining eyes
covered with the tears of deadly fear…
Then on we went with easy steps so that we would not
raise the snow with new kisses and so let
black earth, the fear of every love, to show…
That night the clouds went by without a sound,
that night there was no kissing on those white hills.

Reichenberg, November 15, 1927

7

You nibbled the brown-shining bread of Smiles
and from its spreading crumbs you kneaded
some pretty, perky Laughter-balls, your generous lips
stretched on your shiny teeth, but
  woe,
in its curve, the frilly-blossomed tree of Weeping
was blooming already, and it was as if blood had run
from one of its tiny cracks onto the white crumb
of the bread of Laughter, and from between your teeth, too,
Weeping came out, climbed, and with its rolling,
quivering tear buds, encircled your eyes with blooms,
   through the window of which
      I saw
the rising leaven of Sorrow maturing.

Reichenberg, June 16, 1928.

8

Whilst we embraced,
   woe,
your neckless tore and,
   like teardrops,
into the wrinkles
of the hot pillows,
rolled the shiny
     pearls.

   See,
the pearls had rolled the way
dew roll sometimes,
midst tears, on the skin
of our panting bodies
whilst singing its tired song
               to
       the memory of
       a past embrace.

You see,
you were not careful
and the pearls of love
had fallen from you
once the kisses ended.

Reichenberg-Budapest, July 3, 1928

9

Yesterday you stretched in front of the tile stove
and the hills of your breasts were stretching
your clothes as you leant back
with half closed eyes and warmed
your hands upon the tiles…
the light of the fire bathed your feet
with light and your back crackled
like that of a cat when
it stretches in front of the fire
and the claws of its four velvety feet
creakily dig into
the shiny floor…
your shoes creaked as well
because you, too, are a cat and I like to kiss
the clothing stretching above your breasts
through which the flood of the dizzying,
muscle-tensing warmth of your body
floods onto me as you stretch towards me

Budapest, December 28, 1927

10

You undressed in front of the window yesterday
the lines of your shadow tittered
in the lilac light that filtered in,
and the frozen, teary sickle of the moon
shakily wreathed your hair like
its golden hat of myth…

Do you hear? Behind the wall a neighbour's
gramophone is playing a sad old tune
from the Volga-shores,
outside a clock is moaning midnight…

Leave the window, the golden
moon-hat, throw your dress
on the silent black chair
and give your nakedness to me

Reichenberg, February 7, 1928.

11

I don't love you anymore,
the earth began to move, and stars had fallen,
not because it is the month of falling stars, but
because a halo, woven through all those lonely night
my love,
had also fallen from your brow:
don't be surprised, it's that I no longer love you
and even the skies shed tears
perhaps you were just frightened as a raindrop
fell on your face midst all your startled blondness
yet it’s only the rain now
and believe that it ended;
and that even the sky is mourning this love.
Fear not,
it was only a leaf that fell by my feet
the way your love, too, is falling…
Look now, it's clouded over and the rain had come.

Reichenberg, November 7, 1927

12

Your scent used to drive me crazy,
I would lean my head to you
as one would to dewy
fragrant foreign flowers
quivering in a Japanese vase
on the table in a room at dusk
with their fragrance telling tales of summertime.

I would kiss your lips carefully, silently,
so that your petals would not fall
and you'd be mine for a long time,
but it was in vain, your fragrance had flown away
and now I'm fiddling the painful memory
of an old perfume
and remembering on paper.

Reichenberg, February 21, 1928.

13

I bought a string of white pearls for your neck
and when you kissed me for it
I suddenly noticed the humble merchant
showing the pearls behind the counter
who, praising his merchandise,
was presenting
the prettily shining rows of pearls.
I selected these small white pearls,
though there were dearer, nicer ones,
like the sort you ought to deserve.
And when you kissed me for it,
I wondered, would you have embraced me
more fervently had I wrapped a finer, more glittering,
string of larger pearls as a beauteous decoration
around your neck…
But say!
Is the fire of your lips and lap commensurate perhaps
with the price of pearls…?

Reichenberg, May 9, 1928

14

We broke up.
You bloodied my mouth with your kisses
and wheezily asked me to stay.
I won't stay.
Go inside nicely, and I'll be off
between the milestones in the mud.
What are you looking at?
After those nights of snowy whiteness,
this tearful, stained thaw had followed.
Do you hear?
Now dry-rotted saints mourn
summer in scrawny trees.
Don't cry.
The tears will spoil your eyes
and I cannot continue if you weep.
Do you hear?
The wind is sledding noisily on the hills
and here, in front of you, there's lumpy mud.
Did you understand me?
There's mud. Mud and hate at the bottom
of all resplendent loves.
Now go.
I feel that I adore and hate you,
and because of this, I leave you here on the road now.
My darling.
I love you very much and,
should we be meeting, perhaps I'll start again.
Now go.

Reichenberg, February 14, 1928.
