Come Away, Death (Angol)

Willy-nilly, he comes or goes, with the clown's logic,
Comic in epitaph, tragic in epithalamium,
And unseduced by any mused rhyme.
However blow the winds over the pollen,
Whatever the course of the garden variables,
He remains the constant,
Ever flowering from the poppy seeds.

There was a time he came in formal dress,
Announced by Silence tapping at the panels
In deep apology.
A touch of chivalry in his approach,
He offered sacramental wine,
And with acanthus leaf
And petals of the hyacinth
He took the fever from the temples
And closed the eyelids,
Then led the way to his cool longitudes
In the dignity of the candles.

His mediaeval grace is gone -
Gone with the flame of the capitals
And the leisured turn of the thumb
Leafing the manuscripts,
Gone with the marbles
And the Venetian mosaics,
With the bend of the knee
Before the rose-strewn feet of the Virgin.
The paternosters of his priests,
Committing clay to clay,
Have rattled in their throats
Under the gride of his traction tread.

One night we heard his footfall - one September night -
In the outskirts of a village near the sea.
There was a moment when the storm
Delayed its fist, when the surf fell
Like velvet on the rocks - a moment only;
The strangest lull we ever knew!
A sudden truce among the oaks
Released their fratricidal arms;
The poplars straightened to attention

As the winds stopped to listen
To the sound of a motor drone -
And then the drone was still.
We heard the tick-tock on the shelf,
And the leak of valves in our hearts.
A calm condensed and lidded
As at the core of a cyclone ended breathing.
This was the monologue of Silence
Grave and unequivocal.

What followed was a bolt
Outside the range and target of the thunder,
And human speech curved back upon itself
Through Druid runways and the Piltdown scarps,
Beyond the stammers of the Java caves,
To find its origins in hieroglyphs
On mouths and eyes and cheeks
Etched by a foreign stylus never used
On the outmoded page of the Apocalypse.

Jöjj el, halál (Magyar)

Akarod vagy se, jön-megy bohóclogikával,
Sírföliratnak komikus, nászdalnak tragikus,
S a zavaros rím sem ronthatja meg.
Mindegy, merről fúj virágport a szél,
A kert termése lehet változó,
Ő állandó marad,
A mákszemből virágzik mindörökké.

Volt idő, mikor díszruhába jött,
S csönd jelezte: kopogtatott
Bocsánatkérően.         .
Volt benne valami lovagias,
Misebort hozott,
Medvetalpfűvel
És jácintszirommal
A homlokokról elvitte a lázat,
És lecsukta a szemeket,
S utat mutatott a hűvös messzeségbe,
Gyertyák méltóságteljes fényében.

Középkori kecsessége a múlté,
A múlté, mint városok lángjai,
Mint kéziratot forgató
Ráérős ujjak,
A múlté, mint a márvány
S a velencei mozaikok,
Mint térdeplés a Szűz
Rózsával hintett lába előtt.
Papjainak miatyánkja
A port pornak ajánlva
Torkukban zakatolt
Lépéseinek zaja mögött.

Hallottuk lépteit - szeptember éjjel -
Egy falu szélén, a tengerhez közel.
A viharnak egy pillanatra
Gyöngült az ökle; bársonyként esett
A hullám a sziklára - csak egy pillanatra;
Soha ilyen vihar előtti csöndet!
A tölgyek gyilkos karjait
Elernyesztette a gyors fegyverszünet;
A nyárfák vigyázzállásban figyelték,

Amint megállt a szél, hogy
A motorzúgást hallgathatta
S aztán a zúgás is elnémult.
Hallottuk a polcon a ketyegést,
És szívünkben hogy áramlik a vér.
A csönd sűrűsödött, s bezárult,
S mint tájfun-központ, megszűnt lélegezni,
Ez volt a Csönd monológja,
Egyértelmű, komor.

S aztán lecsapott a villám,
A mennydörgés hatótávolságán kívül,
Az emberi szó visszatért magába
Druida-folyón, Piltdown-síkon keresztül,
Túl a jávai barlang habogásán,
Hogy eredetét arcon, szájon és szemen
Megtalálja a hieroglifákban;
Oly idegen stílusban vésve ki,
Mit nem láttak a Jelenések régi lapjai.
