Scott, Walter portréja

The Lay of the Last Minstrel - Canto First (detail) (Angol)

The feast was over in Branksome tower...

The feast was over in Branksome tower,

And the Ladye had gone to her secret bower;

Her bower that was guarded by word and by spell,

Deadly to hear, and deadly to tell--

Jesu Maria, shield us well!

No living wight, save the Ladye alone,

Had dared to cross the threshold stone.

The tables were drawn, it was idlesse all;

Knight and page, and household squire,

Loiter'd through the lofty hall,

Or crowded round the ample fire:

The staghours, weary with the chase,

Lay stretch'd upon the rusy foloor

And urged, in dreams, the forest race,

From Teviot-stone to Eskdale-moor.

Nine-and-twenty knights of fame

Hung their shields in Branksome-Hall,

Nine-and-twenty squires of name

Brought them their steeds to bower from stall;

        Nine-and-twenty yeomen tall

        Waited, duteous, on them all;

        They were all knights of mettle true,

        Kinsmen to the bold Buccleuch.

Ten of them were sheathed in steel,

With belted sword, and spur on heel:

They quitted not their harness bright,

Neither by day, nor yet by night:

        They lay down to rest,

        With corslet laced,

Pillow'd on buckler cold and hard;

        They carved at the meal

        With gloves of steel,

And they drank the red wine through the helmet barr'd.

Ten squires, ten yeomen, mail-clad men,

Waited the beck of the warders ten;

Thirty steeds, both fleet and wight,

Stood saddled in stable day and night,

Barbed with frontlet of steel, I trow,

And with Jedwood-axe at saddlebow;

A hundred more fed free in stall:--

Such was the custom of Branksome-Hall.

Why do these steeds stand ready dight?

Why watch these warriors, arm'd, by night?--

They watch, to hear the blood-hound baying?

They watch to hear the war-horn braying;

To see St. George's red cross streaming,

To see the midnight beacon gleaming:

They watch, against Southern force and guile,

Lest Scroop, or Howard, or Percy's powers,

Threaten Branksome's lordly towers,

From Warkwork, or Naworth, or merry Carlisle.

Az utolsó vándorénekes dala - Első ének (részlet) (Magyar)

Lovagok a Branksome-teremben

Lakoma vége, Branksome-torony éje,

a Hölgy siet titkos rejtekére:

őrzi helyét bűvszó, varázslat -

halld vagy mondd, fia vagy a Halálnak;

Ó, Jézus, Mária, védj meg, áldlak!

Csak a Hölgyet látta az a szoba,

más élő nem mert belépni oda.

Asztal szedve, a csend leszáll;

lovag, apród s a ház ura

a teremben szerte álldogál,

vagy arcukon parazsak sugara;

elnyűtt vadászfalka pihen

a padlaton, gyér vacka nád,

álmán is vonzza végzetesen

tevioti szirt, eskdale-i láp.

Huszonkilenc hires lovag:

Branksome termében pajzsa függ;

huszonkilencen jó urak:

bejönnek, lovuk is velük;

huszonkilenc nemes, együtt,

parancsra vár mindegyikük:

hős voltuk szó nem érheti –

bátor Buccleuch rokonai.

Acél borít tízet közülük,

sarkantyújuk van, kardos övük:

vértjüktől nem válnak soha,

tündöklik nappal s éjszaka:

páncélba gubózva

térnek nyugovóra,

párnájuk pajzs, kerek s hideg,

vaskesztyűvel metszik

a húst, s leeresztik

sisakrostélyuk, vörös bort ízlelni meg.

Tíz kisúr, tíz lovag, páncélosok:

várják, lendüljön tíz parancsnoki bot;

harminc csatamén, gyors, okos állat:

éjt-nap készen, nyergelve állnak,

acél homlokvédővel fölszerelve,

s a nyeregkápán ott a Jedwood-fejsze;

s még nyergetlen száz ló az istállóban:

ez volt a szokás Branksome Hallban.

Mind e kész paripák mire állnak készen?

Fegyveresek mért őrködnek éjten?

Fülelnek, hátha véreb csahol,

hátha a csatakürt hangja szól;

Szent György vörös keresztje végre,

jelzőtűz nem lobban-e az éjbe

–a ravasz déli erők lesnek ám! –,

s ügyelni kell Scroop, Howard s Percy hadára,

s hogy Branksome sok fenséges tornyát ne bántsa

Warkworth, Naworth s Carlisle, a vidám.
