On the slope (Angol)
To my window quiver sends, Brooding over passing times is My soul's shade as it descends. I look back, like do the clouds on Countryside that passed beneath: It was sombre - now with joy filled, Green and clear seems all the heath.
Happy years, if you indeed were Happier, as I recall, - Mounds of my past, green and blooming! Let me think about you all. Although woes and sighs a-plenty Filled my mouth for ever more. By one fewer were those sighs for I had faith in what’s in store!
Now this faith is… quiet doubting, And the more I walk the track, The deeper is all the darkness; Nor can I be turning back. Not rising, like in the past, for My life's downward slope is this; Like night walkers crossing water, Must take care, ere all’s amiss.
