Csoóri Sándor: With a green branch (Kezemben zöld ág Angol nyelven)

Csoóri Sándor portréja

Kezemben zöld ág (Magyar)

Kihabosodik majd újra a tavasz,
mint a folyton éneklő madár- szája
s a hantokat is körbeállja a fú,
de te már nem mosolyogsz többé
semmire, ami eleven lesz.

Viszek neked zöld ágat, csibés barkát,
újjongó gólyahírt a malomsánc alól,

erre a fekete lukakat égető szemedre:
száll az iskolai, meddő krétapor bele,
mintha a szétvert Karthágó pora csak most érne hozzád.

With a green branch (Angol)

The spring will break out in foam again
like the bill-mouth of a bird that always sings
and grass will surround the mounds,
but you will smile no more
at anyone or anything alive.

I bring you a green branch, catkin with kittens,
jubilant marigold from below the mill-trench,
upon them there shines the glance of god
and that of the first walking beetle off to see the world,
but you, drawing aside, are only staring at the wall.

Who knows if I will outlive this incurable unease,
but I do want to remember your final eyes as well,
these eyes of yours, that burn black holes:
dry chalk-dust of the school flies into them.
as if the dust of routed Carthage had only just arrived.

I don't believe that death is cleverer than I.
I don't believe that death could deprive me of you,
I see myself in you, as if sitting in a beauteous wound;
with a green branch in my hand and behind me, oh, behind me,
imponderable spaces: the darkening Beyond.
