Csoóri Sándor: Girls with melons (Lányok dinnyével Angol nyelven)

Csoóri Sándor portréja

Lányok dinnyével (Magyar)

Fáradtan s kicsit kényeskedve
mennek föl a hegyre.
Vállukhoz emelt tenyerükben sárgadinnye:
édesség mézgömbje, leszakított Nap.

Ennyi maradt meg nekik a hajdani édenből?
mikor még keresztül-kasul csatangolták a földeket,
s meztelen lábbal húsos, nagy leveleken tapostak?
Szoknyájuk átlátszó, mint a víz,
de mint a víz, megtöri a tekintetet.

Jönnek a zajos cérnagyárból,
derekuk orsójára föltekeredik a világ,
fák pillantása, napsugár sárga pamutja
s az eltéphetetlen férfi-vágy.

Bolondság, de hirtelen szomjas leszek
lábujjamtól a homlokomig –
Bolondság, de hirtelen elém loccsan a tenger,
taraján hatalmas muzsika lakik –

s mindez miattuk, kiket nem is szeretek,
csak látok, mint névtelen tüzet, sétáló madarat.
Sugárzik felém a válluk, mint a rádium
augusztus üveg-felhői alatt.

Szenvedek majd az emlékezésől,
ha a hullámzó lépcsőn föllebegnek.
Itthagyják rám a nyarat, a mindenség izzó formáit,
s hódítását napot-emelő tenyerüknek.

Girls with melons (Angol)

Tired, yet prancing from time to time,
they are proceeding up the mountain-high.
Melons in hand, on palms held by their shoulders:
honey-dews, sweetness, sun torn from the sky.

Is this what’s left for them from that bygone Eden
when they were roving, criss-crossing the ground,
treading barefoot on large, fleshy leaves?
Their skirts are transparent like the water,
But, like the water does, they twist the view around.

They are coming from the noisy yarn-works,
their spindle-waists wind the world’s joys, travails,
the glance of trees, the yellow cotton of the sun,
and the untearable desire of the males.

Foolishness, true, but suddenly,
from head to toe I thirst -
foolishness, but suddenly before me: an ocean-splash,
and dwelling on its crest a mighty music burst -

and all of this because of them, whom I don't even love,
just look at as I would at a bird, a distant flame.
Like radium, their shoulders beam towards me
neath the glassy clouds that during August reign.

Suffer I shall from memories of them
if they float up those stairs, prancing, one by one.
They’ll leave to me the summer, the glowing shapes of allness,
the conquests of their palms that raise the sun.
