Elsüllyedt föld (Magyar)

Sár és agyag az ég és a nap és a felhők,
sár és agyag a föld és a szó.

Két kiszikkadt kút nézi egymást vakon.
Minden moccanatlan.

Kiszáradt fa a tájban,
csend a hallgatásban.

Bivalyimbolygású este,
iszapba száradt lábnyomok.

Letaposott fű visít,
kallantyú káromkodik,

tövisek, sovány malacok között
baltával nagyolt bölcső tántorog.

Végállomásról a vonat,
visszafordul a gondolat.

Homokvermek.

Konok babonák, gyűlölködés,
villámcsapta szerelmek,
megszállott tüzes kerekek
a síkos agyagon.

     Összeírni jönnek az urak,
     hallgatnak a kutak.

     Kutyák rontanak le a dombról,
mossa a víz lefele a diót.

     A völgyekben megdagad a sár,

     úszik a krumpli,

     habot vet a krumplivirág,

     vitorlát bont a szél,

     kihajóznak a dombok

     és a hajótöröttek

     meghalni hazatérnek.

Mézillat, málnaillat
szivárog föl a föld alól.

Kutyatej a szájban.

Vasárnapi réz-egek zúgnak
mezítlábas házak fölött.

Forog a szél,

készül az agyag-alkonyat.

Megy az asszony fel a dombon,
     feje fölött úszik a vonat,
     csúsznak a sínek visszafele,
     hátrálnak a kerekek,

zuhan vissza a vonat a völgybe,
     zuhan a fiú,
     betemeti a bánya.

Kútból kútba kiált a visszhang.

Lefele hull a szó,
lefele hull a gondolat,
lefele néz a lélek.

Szívén egy kisüveg remény.

Görnyed az ég is.
Tompa a fény,
halkan hull az eső.

Álombeli veszett kutyák
robognak a dombokon át.

Kifordul a krumpli a földből,
kifordul a szó a szájból.

Omlik az ég,
betemet a bánya.

Ég, vagy föld, vagy gondolat,
valami mozdul.
Kitépi magát a sárból
és véresen a világba löki magát.

Felfakad az idő a föld alól
és a kutakban felbukkan az arcunk.

Sunken earth (Angol)

Mud and clay are the sky and the sun and the clouds,
mud and clay are the earth and the word.

Two dried-out wells look at each other blindly.
Nothing stirs.

Dead tree in the landscape,
hush in the silence.

Evening with a buffalo-sway,
footprints that dried in the silt.

The trod-down grass is squealing,
the fastener is cursing,

a cradle roughed out with an axe
wobbles among the thorns and skinny piglets.

From the terminus, a train,
a thought is turning back again.

Pitfalls in the sand.

Stubborn superstitions, hate,
lightning-struck loves,
obsessed fiery wheels
upon the slippery clay.

The gentry come with lists to fill,
    the wells keep still.

Dogs are racing down from the hill,
nuts washed downward by a water-spill.

    Mud swells in the valleys,

    potatoes float,

    potato blooms are casting foam,

    the wind makes sail,

    the hills ship out,

    and the shipwrecked

    go home to die.

Fragrance of honey, raspberry,
is seeping from below the ground.

Spurge-weed in the mouth.

Coppery Sunday skies are blustering
above the barefoot houses.

The wind is whirling,

a clay-dusk is brewing.

The woman goes up the hill,
    train drifts above her head,
on the slippery rails the wheels
    are sliding, cease to grab,

the train hurtles back to the valley,
    the boy hurtles,
    is buried by the mine.

The echo shouts from well to well.

The word is falling,
the thought is falling,
the soul is looking down.

Close to her heart there’s a flask of hope.

The sky is also stooping.
The light is dim
and quietly falls the rain.

Rabid dogs in dreams prevail,
dashing over hill and dale.

Potatoes come from dug-up ground,
mouth is where the words are found.

The sky pours,
the mine inters.

Sky, or earth, or thought,
something is stirring
It tears itself from the mud,
and bloodied, thrusts itself into the world.

Time bursts from below the ground
and the wells reflect our faces.
