Kosztolányi Dezső: Litany (On autumn streets…) (Litánia (Az őszi utcán…) Angol nyelven)

Kosztolányi Dezső portréja

Litánia (Az őszi utcán…) (Magyar)

Az őszi utcán fuj a szél.
A fa az éjszakába fél.

Csak fuj a szél, fuj, egyre fuj
Azt mondja, nincsen semmi uj.

Nincs semmi uj, csak unalom.
Hányódás régi utakon.

Nincs semmi uj, nincs semmi jó
És nem igaz, hogy lenni jó.

Nem jó az élet méze sem.
Nem jó aludni csendesen.

Nem jó ásítva kelni fel
S fülledt undorral telni el.

Nem jó feküdni gondtalan
És átkozott, ki gondba van.

Nem jó kacagni tétován
A virágfüstölős szobán.

Nem jó rohanni sebtiben,
Nem jó: a nem, nem: az igen.

Nem jó a csend, nem jó a szó.
A sirba tán még ott se jó.

De úgy szeretnék egymagam
A földre esni hangtalan.

Csak esni, bukni, hullani,
Minthogyha fájna valami.

Elhagyni sárga butorom,
Csatangolni, mint egykoron.

Lakástalan és egyedül
Bolyongani, kivert ebül.

Ott, ahol senkise tanyáz
Bámulni, hogy lobog a gáz.

Halálba ringani vakon
A dagadt, őszi árakon.

Elveszni lassan hallgatag
A sirva-siró ég alatt.

A vállamon egy rongy köpeny.
Így állani közönyösen.

Sürü esőben állani,
Mint a kopár fa ágai.

Csak fázni egész éjszaka
És ázni, mint egy árva fa…

Litany (On autumn streets…) (Angol)

On autumn streets, when winds attend,
The trees are scared as nights descend.

The wind, it blows, just blows away,
It says: there's nothing new to say.

None’s new, all's boring as before.
Pillar to post on ways of yore.

None's new, there's nothing good for me,
Not true that it's so good to be.

No good the sweet of life, I found.
No good to sleep without a sound.

No good to yawn and then get up,
Let frowsy loathing fill the cup.

No good to lie when worry free,
As one, who frets, accursed be.

No good when laughing's hesitant,
In rooms incensed with flower scent.

No good a slap-dash on the go,
Not good the no, but no is so.

No good the silence, nor the word.
Perhaps not even when interred.

I would so like, without a sound,
To fall alone upon the ground.

To drop, to tumble, fall, again,
As if somewhere I felt a pain.

To leave my yellow furnishings,
And roam, as once, as if on wings.

Alone, no home, be booted out,
Like beaten dogs, to roam about.

Where no one camps, sleep in gutters,
Watching ways that gaslight flutters.

To blindly drift to one's demise
On autumn rivers' swelling rise.

Be still, and know not where one went
Beneath a weeping firmament.

With ragged cape, my shoulders bent.
To stand like this, be nonchalant.

To stand in rain that will not ease,
As do bare branches of the trees.

Throughout the night, be cold, to freeze,
Be soaked with rain like lonely trees…
