a nyárfák dalát
hajnalok hívó szavát
anyád ölelő karját

Letter (Angol)

Letter

(hundreds of letters have set off to you, but your reply’s been lost somewhere)

My dear son,

I’m not counting the days any more, one is exactly like the other. They’re killing time in shabby clothes, none of them put on their Sunday best. Sometimes Sunday gets out and irons its snow-white linen shirt, but by the time it could put it on, Thursday steps forward, just embraces and puts it back among the black ones.
Even colourful shirts have faded, they’ve forgotten by now what it was like when you were still wearing them. They believe each day is Thursday, so why should they be happy, they just keep waiting for you to reach out and choose one.
The door of the wardrobe whines till morning, sometimes opens up, and then its soft squeaking lets us know it doesn’t get any sleep at night, it shares the sadness it feels with the desk. They talk whispering about the past, not letting me hear it and keep vigil with them.
But I can hear it, no matter how soft that whisper is. Under my closed eyes I dream sleeplessly.
Of winters, when I would rub your fingers in my hands to make them warm and try putting your cap back, it was always on the verge of falling off. Your shoelace got caught in the rope of the sleigh, and of course it made me fall on the face.
You watched me with your wonderful, large eyes, laughed to yourself quietly, and when you saw it was nothing serious, you laughed out loudly.
You had such a laugh that the snowflakes hearing it just danced around, the icicles from the eavesdrop kept falling onto the ground one after the other, so that they could sit next to you in the soft snow.
You had such a laugh that raindrops stopped falling midway and ran back to their cloud-mother to ask her to watch you.
I miss it so dearly.
You know, even spring missed it so much that it didn’t stay long with us. It often cried and hardly ever smiled.
Autumn was also gloomy each day it stayed here. It took shivery walks among your trees, caressed the petals of your rose only, then called the leaf-children of the trees and bushes to have a rest together on the bed of dead leaves.
Maybe it was summer only that didn’t want us to see its agony. It woke up with a smile and scattered its burning kisses all day till night.
I’m dreaming, memories polished more beautiful by time surround me in white splendour, and tell me stories of what can never be again.
Pain has grown into me so very much that it will stay with me forever.
It conjures up the way I embrace you into my arms, it hides the warmth of your body into my lap, your words onto my tongue, your voice into my ears.
Your touch finds home on my shoulders each dawn, your fragrance wanders among my clothes, and your smile goes to sleep and wakes up with me.
I’m dreaming of a spring that pretends to come back one day, and everything will be the same as it used to be.

… you already forgot
the roads running with you
the aspens’ song, too,
the call of early mornings
your mother’s arms embracing
