Parti Nagy Lajos: Quiet sham address to the house of literature (Halk, talmi vers az irodalom házához Angol nyelven)

Parti Nagy Lajos portréja

Halk, talmi vers az irodalom házához (Magyar)

Ne csak papír, de légy, te ház, a Ház,
hol majd a szellem megteáz,
és megkávéz. S a test is.
Ott éri majd nap is, napest is,
hol súlyosul és sűrül alkonyatkor
a Károlyi-kert fáin a konyakpor,
míg fönt a lámpák barna réz
nyelén szikráz a méz.
a versek jól tömött staniclik,
nagy dunnazsák a próz',

Quiet sham address to the house of literature (Angol)

Not merely paper, o house, but be
the House in which the spirit stops for tea
or coffee. And the body too.
Dawn will find there, and sunset too,
where the Károlyi Square trees at dusk
grow heavy and dense with Cognac-dust,
where melancholy, as evening rises,
sits comfortably as do female guises.
And when night comes in her propitious décolletage,
vulgar dimness, she’ll order a light fromage
and rock her blonde bitter ale,
while above her honey twinkles pale
on the lamps’ brass handle.
Be not a place of waver nor of trivial ramble,
nor a paper fly, but be, ye House, refined,
wherein the quick and dead entwine
red, white, green, and diluted deep purple,
smoking, strutting and eating supper,
goldsmiths, syngeing and rejoycing,
verses are well-stocked paper twisting
and a great quilt-cover prose,
while not just anything, even if it goes.
All ye who transgress here are taken in as guests,
if paper you be, House, then be flypaper,
as the buzz of good intentions shakes ye,
and if ever you are ready to fly,
not, on the one hand, but somewhat on the fly,
arise, o stones, you simple charge of weight,
and, House, be yours not only paper flight!
