Laura keringő (Magyar)
Nemerey Éva és Ludwig Károly emlékére*
Pécs. Ezerkilenszáznegyvenkilenc
februárja, madárszív-fagyasztó
téli éjszaka – és egyetemi bál.
Kreolbőrű anyám a halványsárga
(kölcsön) taftruhában –
a végzetére vár.
És jön egy pengeéles,
sápadt, kicsit pökhendi diákgyerek.
Összefogódznak, s együtt keringenek.
Keringőjük és kerítőjük a Laura ;
két távoli sírban is
egyszerre moccan meg poruk
erre a dallamra.

The Laura Waltz (Angol)
To the memory of Éva Nemerey and Károly Ludwig*
Pécs. February of nineteen hundred and forty-nine,
a bird's heart-freezing
winter night – ball at the university.
My olive-skinned mother in the pale yellow
(borrowed) taffeta gown -
awaits her fate.
And comes a sharp-as-a-tack,
pale, somewhat prideful student lad.
They grab each other and wheel about.
Their waltz and procurer was the Laura;
in two distant graves, too,
their dust moves together in time
to the tune of it.
