Jön (Magyar)
Magányos út, november, éjszaka,
Koromsötét.
Valaki jön mögöttem,
Súlyosan jön:
Hallom léptei döngő ütemét.
Eremben lassan hűlni kezd a vér, -
De nem sietek, már nem sietek,
Tudom, hogy úgyis mindjárt utolér.
Lehajtom a fejem.
Ez már nem félelem,
Ez már az Ámen halk mozdulata:
Az irgalmatlan léptű idegen
Hadd jöjjön hát. -
Oltson el minden kis-ablaknyi fényt
Csalóka fényt, -
Tegye teljessé ezt az éjszakát.
Jön.
Nagy, mérföldnyelő léptekkel halad,
Most, itt, itt lesz a nagy találkozás,
Ahol megálltam,
E haldokló lámpavilág alatt.
Most! - Elment.
Elment, és szóba sem állott velem,
Csak megnézett a kalapja alól
Akár az élet és a szerelem.

He comes (Angol)
Lonely road, November, Soot-dark the night. Someone is coming behind me, His steps are hard: I hear their pounding beat. The blood in my veins begins to cool, - But I don't hurry, I no longer hurry, I know he will be catching up to me. I bend my head. This in no longer fear, It is the unspoken motion of an Amen: Just let the relentless-footed stranger Keep coming. - Let him block out all faint lights of small windows, Elusive lights, - Let him complete this night. He comes. Keeps coming with giant steps, The grand meeting will be here and now, Here, where I stopped, Beneath this dying lamplight. Now! - He passed by. Passed me without a word, Merely looked at me from beneath his hat, Much as does life and love.
