Biography
Nasce nel 1929, a 14 anni deportato ad Auschwitz. Maturità nel '48 a Budapest. 1948-50 collabora alla rivista Világosság (Illuminazione), operaio di fabbrica nel '51 e dal '53 scrittore free lance. Il primo romanzo Sorstalanság, solo dopo anni vide la luce ed ebbe risonanza. Sue opere sono tradotte in numerose lingue, lui stesso traduce dal tedesco Freud, Hoffmannstahl, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein. Nel 1983 riceve il Premio Milán Füst, nel 1989 quello di Attila József, Nel1992 è la volta del Premio Soros, e nel '96 del «Márai». Il Premio Kossuth è del 1997. Nel 1995 Premio Letterario alla Fiera di Brandenburgo, nel 1997 ottiene il Gran Premio a Lipsia, soprattutto per Sorstalanság. Per i meriti di diffondere la cultura tedesca, nel 1997 riceve il Gran Premio «Friedrich Gundolf» dell'Accademia delle Lettere e delle Poesie Tedesche. Nel maggio 2000 Premio Herder, in ottobre il Die Welt gli conferisce un premio, e nel 2001 riceve il «Pour le Mérite», il massimo riconoscimento che si può dare in Germania agli artisti.
