Beaver, Bruce: Day 7
Day 7 (Angol)That creaking sound from the beach isn't a lone gull's abuse or any bird. It is the children's swing perennially unoiled. A generation ago I sat on the even then worn wooden seat and swung out and up towards the sea, the sky, then always back to earth. I lay on the seat and spun round in circles winding the Chains together then let them unwind spinning me into pleasant giddiness, an easy drunkenness and no hangover. Always out towards the sea like a taunt in its unquiet face. Always back towards the pines and the streets-a child's straitened freedom, the most limited of all adventures, I hear the swings creaking now and have no desire for outward and backward escapades, for the brief drunkenness. I wish the children well and do not envy them.
