Ady Endre: Lelkek a pányván

Portre of Ady Endre

Lelkek a pányván (Hungarian)

Kipányvázták a lelkemet,

Mert ficánkolt csikói tűzben,

Mert hiába korbácsoltam,

Hiába űztem, hiába űztem.

Ha láttok a magyar Mezőn

Véres, tajtékos, pányvás ménet:

Vágjátok el a kötelét,

Mert lélek az, bús, magyar lélek.

Tethered souls (English)

They had tethered my frisky soul,

For in it a colt's fires burned,

In vain did I apply the whip,

In vain I chased, it pranced and turned.

Should you see a stallion on a

Magyar meadow, tied to a pole,

Untether it, cut it free for

It's a soul, a sad Magyar soul.
