Eörsi István: Nails (Szögek in English)

Amikor szöget nyeltek a cigányok,
tört krumplit tömködtek beléjük,
hogy belük ki ne lukadjon,
rugdosták őket a műkő-padlón,
mert pluszmunkát okoztak.

A szöget magam is lenyeltem,
ezért nem végeztem kereszten,
így lettem belül csupa rozsda.
A pléhkorszak hajnalán kezdtem.
Itt vagyok. Nézz rám gyanakodva.
De volt egyszer egy szép napom.

Mindig kifosztva gazdagodtam.
Mindig lenyomva magasodtam.
Párás tükröm lett az a nap.
Letörlöm. Nézd meg arcomat.
Tükörből nézve igazabb.
 

When gypsies had swallowed a nail,
they stuffed them with potato mash,
so that their guts would not get holed,
and kicked them around on a cast stone floor
for causing extra work.
 
I swallowed the nail as well,
that's why no cross had ended my route,
that's how my innards got full of rust.
The tin age was dawning when I set out.
Now I'm here. Look askance if you must.
But one of my days was nice.
 
I always got richer when plundered.
Got taller when pushed down or under.
That day became my foggy mirror.
l wipe it off. Observe my face.
In a mirror it is truer.
