Csokonai Vitéz Mihály: Bittersweet (Keserédes in English)

Portre of Csokonai Vitéz Mihály
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Keserédes (Hungarian)

A rózsa szép virágszál,

De tüske szúrdal ágán.

Ha mézet ád is a méh,

Fúlánkja néha megcsíp.

A bor betőlt örömmel

S mámort okoz gyakorta.

Szép vagy te, Lilla, s édes, -

Vidít kegyes szerelmed;

De mennyi - ah, de mennyi

Kín is gyötör miattad!

Bittersweet (English)

A stem of rose has beauty,

Yet thorns on the stem prickle.

Although the bee gives honey,

Its barbs at times will stings thee.

A glass of wine delights, is

Intoxicating often.

Beauteous Lilla, sweet one, -

With gracious love thou gladdens;

But oh, what endless anguish

I suffer because of thee!
