Egy képet láttam drága, öreg úrnak
S nagy orvosnak a szobája falán:
"Jézus, az Orvos."
Ül az ágyszélén szelíd-komolyan.
Az ágyban fekszik egy beteg leány.
Csak ül és fogja a leány kezét
És néz rá hosszasan,
Tekintetében gyógyító erő,
Áldás és béke van.

A nagy orvos, a drága öreg úr
Azóta elpihent.
De emlékéből, mint a fali képből
Sugárzik az erő
S leszáll a szívemre a csend.

Ő ama názáreti örök Orvos
Hű követője volt.
A beteg fölé szívével hajolt.
Nem mondotta sokat:
Uram, Uram.
De: "Aki cselekszi az én igémet" -
Az velem van.

És én most minden igaz orvos arcán,
Ki szeretettel fogja meg kezem,
Az ő arcát s az örök Orvos arcát
Felismerem.

                        To the memory of Dr József Imre snr
 
I saw in the room of a great doctor
And dear old gentleman, a picture on the wall:
"Jesus, the Physician."
He, gently serious, sits by the bedside.
A sick girl is lying in the bed.
He just sits, holding the girl's hand,
And looks at her at length.
His countenance has healing power,
Blessing and peace.
 
Thar great physician, that dear old gentleman,
Has gone to his rest since then.
But from his memory, as from that picture on the wall,
Strength radiates
And quietude is descending on my heart.
 
He was a true disciple
Of that eternal Nazareth physician.
He leant over the sick with his heart.
He did not keep repeating
My Lord, my Lord.
But: "He, who acts upon my words" -
Is with me.
 
And now I perceive on the face of every true physician
Who holds my hand with love,
His face, as well as the face of
The Eternal Physician.
