a cséphadarós gyalogok,
akik gerincüket – és a kaszát is –
kiegyenesítették,

a vörösbársony-süvegűek,
akik vérrel írták zászlaikra:
a hazáért és szabadságért,

Bem honvédéi,
akik felvirágozták a rézágyúkat
a karikára hulló esőben,

a felszisszent nyomorultak,
akik nem csupán a falat kenyeret,
de az igazságot is éhezni merték,

a föld alatt szervezkedők,
akik tűzhelyet, családot
elsősorban másoknak reméltek,

az újjáépítők,
akik gyopáros szívóssággal
virultak ki csúcsán a romhegyeknek,

március újraéledt fiai,
akik sugárként hatoltak át
az októberi ólmos szürkeségen,

az itthon maradók,
akik egy hitetlen, kilyukadt-falú országban
zokszó nélkül kezdték gyűjteni a rőzsét.

És igen, bolondok azok is,
akik a felsoroltak bolondságait
folytatni szeretnék.

Ám közveszélyes őrültek fogtak össze,
hogy a bolondokat innen kirekesszék.

those on foot who carry flails
who straightened their backbones -
as well as the scythes,
 
those with red velvet headgear
who wrote in blood: "For country and for freedom",
onto their banners,
 
Bem's homeland defenders,
who decorated their brazen guns
with blooms in pelting rain,
 
the indignant poor,
who dared to hunger. not merely for a morsel
of bread, but also for justice,
 
the underground organisers,
who had hoped for hearths and families
primarily for others,
 
the rebuilders,
who flourished with weed-like tenacity
atop the rubble-mountains,
 
the reanimated sons of March,
who pierced, like rays of light,
October's leaden greyness,
 
the ones who stayed at home and,
without saying much, began collecting kindling
in a faithless, border-breached country.
 
And yes, madmen are those, too,
who desire to continue the madness
of those already listed.
 
But then maniacal public menaces
had banded together to eliminate the madmen.
