Erdély

A mi anyánk, 
Erdély 
nehéz szívűnek szült meg. 
Három itt élő nép kincsét, 
fájdalmát, büszkeségét, 
fenyők nem alkuvó 
gerincét, 
folyók szilajságát, 
gyönyörű dalok 
csillogását 
adta számunkra 
úgy, amint megfogant 
a Történelem útvesztőiben. 
Így bízta rám magát 
másnyelvű testvéreim közt. 
A Maros, az Olt s a két Küküllő 
keresztvizébe magyarul mártott; 
románul a románt, 
németül a szászt, 
gyermekeiként egy keresztvízbe 
a mi anyánk 
Erdély. 
Egyformán oltotta magát szívünkbe 
a mi anyánk: 
Erdély.

Our mother
Transylvania
made us heavy hearted at birth.
She gave us the treasures
the pains, the pride,
the unbending
spine of pines,
the boisterousness of rivers,
the sparkle of
gorgeous songs
of the three peoples
 who live here, the way
it was conceived in the maze of History.
This is how our mother, Transylvania, put herself into
my care among my siblings who speak another tongue.
She dipped me as a Hungarian into the baptismal waters
of the Maros, the Olt and the two Küküllő rivers
the way she did a Romanian in Romanian
and a Saxon in German,
us all as her own children
into one baptismal water:
Transylvania.
Our Mother, Transylvania,
grafted herself equally
into all our hearts.
