Juhász Gyula: Farewell (Búcsú in English)

Portre of Juhász Gyula

Búcsú (Hungarian)

Mielőtt innen végkép elmegyek,
Szeretnék elköszönni, emberek.

Mint rab, akinek int a szabad út,
Búcsút rebeg, mielőtt szabadult.

Mint a madár, kit Dél vár arra túl,
Az eresz alján még egy dalt tanul.

Mit is daloljak, én szegény beteg,
Mit is dadogjak nektek, emberek?

Talán nem is kell még búcsúzni se?
Hisz észre sem vett engem senkise.

Csak egy könny voltam, aki porba hull,
Csak egy sóhaj, ki égbe szabadul.

Csak egy csók, aki hideg kőre lel,
Csak egy szó, kire visszhang nem felel.

Egy pillangó, ki csillagot keres
S elgázolja egy durva szekeres.

Farewell (English)

Before I'm leaving never to return,
I'd like to say farewell to each in turn.

Like a captive receiving freedom's call,
Is panting farewells ere outside the wall.

Like birds that South's expecting on the wing,
Yet neath the eaves still learn a song to sing.

What song could I sing, I, poor sickly thing,
For all of you, what could my stutter bring?

No need perhaps for farewell's final call?
No one had noticed me here after all.

A tear was I, destined in dust to lie,
A sigh that seeks its freedom in the sky.

Mere kiss that finds cold stone with which to bond,
Mere word to which the echoes don't respond.

A butterfly that looks at stars' appeals
And is run over by a drayman's wheels.
