Kassák Lajos: Eight lines (Nyolc sor in English)

Portre of Kassák Lajos

Nyolc sor (Hungarian)

Ismét elvérzett egy nap. Hallom

a halál láthatatlan harangja kondul,

a hűvös szél pillangókat és virágokat

borzongat a hold fényölében.

Ifjú pár áll a híd peremén

alattuk a mély folyó, akár a végzet.

Csönd. E bús órán nemcsak a rózsa szirma,

a jóremény szárnya is lehull.

Eight lines (English)

Once more a day had bled away. I'm hearing

the toll of the death bell that cannot be seen,

a chill wind makes the butterflies and flowers

tremble in the light-lap of the moon.

Young couple stands on the edge of the bridge,

below them, like kismet, lies the river-deep.

A silent, sad hour. Not just the rose petals,

the wings of good hope will also be falling.
