Szilágyi Domokos: Christmas (Karácsony in English)

A puha hóban, csillagokban,
az ünnepi foszlós kalácson
láthatatlanul ott a jel,
hogy itt van újra karácsony.

Mint szomjazónak a pohár víz,
úgy kell mindig e kis melegség,
hisz arra született az ember,
hogy szeressen és szeressék.
 
S hogy ne a hóban, csillagokban,
ne ünnepi foszlós kalácson,
ne díszített fákon, hanem
a szívekben legyen karácsony.

In fluffy snow and in the stars,
sweet loaves which to the feast pertain,
there is a sign that can't be seen,
but says that Christmas came again.
 
Like water's needed by the parched,
all need this warmth, one may conceive,
for men were born to give their love,
and so in turn a love receive.
 
And so that not in snow or stars,
sweet loaves which to the feast pertain,
or fancy trees be Christmas felt,
but in their hearts be in the main.
