Bak Rita: They launched those sputniks (Kilőtték a putnikokat in English)

Portre of Bak Rita

Kilőtték a putnikokat (Hungarian)

Azért lett olyan furcsa minden,
mert kilőtték a putnikokat –
mondta még régen nagymama.
Mindennap a konyhában ül,
mint egy anyakirálynő.
Körbefonja a fény,
amikor belépek.
Csillog a gang.
Dundi kisbabák alszanak
a lakásokban.
Már nem bombáznak.
Ne félj,
nem fognak már hasba rúgni,
mint akkor, ’45-ben.
És nem kell
magadra döntened
a szekrényt,
mert nem tudsz enni adni
a gyerekeidnek.
A világ billeg,
azért lett olyan furcsa minden –
kezdi újból.
Miközben a
betonkertben
búgnak a galambok.

They launched those sputniks (English)

Launching all those sputniks is the reason
for the strangeness of everything these days -
as grandma used to say back then.
She sits, like a queen mother,
in the kitchen each day.
Light encircles her
when I enter.
The passageway shines.
Plump babies are asleep.
in the apartments
They aren’t bombing any more.
Don't worry,
they won't kick you in the guts
the way they did back in '45.
And you won't have to tip
the wardrobe
on yourself
because you don't have
food to give your children.
The world is tipping,
That’s why everything's so strange -
she starts to say again.
Meanwhile,
pigeons are cooing
in the concrete garden.
