Radnóti Miklós: Forced March (Erőltetett menet in English)

Forced March (English)A fool, who after falling will rise, will not remain, who bends the knee, the ankle to test the shifting pain, who'll start as if supported by wings and walks away, in vain the ditch awaits him, he does not dare to stay and if you ask the reason he'll turn and may reply: awaiting are a wife and a wiser way to die. A fool the simple soul is for long above the homes there's only been the seared wind whirling while it roams; the house colapsed, the plum-tree destroyed and woe betide: be-fuzzed with fear the night of the native countryside. Oh, if I could start believing - not just with heart alone - in all that's worth believing : a place to go to: home; if it were there! If as before the bee of peace would try to raid and buzz the cooling plum jam in the cool verandah shade, if in the dozing gardens late summer-still would preen and sun itself and fruit would sway naked twixt the green, if Fanny were to wait there so blonde beside the hedge and morning's careful hand would describe the shadow's edge, - the moon's so round this evening! perhaps may yet be so! Shout at me friend, don't pass me, and I will rise to go!
