Vas István: 1944 június 6

Vas István portréja

1944 június 6 (Magyar)

Zöld autó, zöld egyenruhában szőke tiszt,
S míg mellette vigan figyel vadászkutyája,
E város életét Párizs és Moszkva közt
A német szelíden, de láthatóan utálja.

Fékez a gépkocsi. Piros fény. Tilos út.
A tiszt maga elé néz, vár és messzegondol.
Egy lelkes úriember látja, odafut.
Ragyogni kezd kopasz feje a buzgalomtól.

S töri a szót: "Sie fahren nach Astoria?"
A tiszthez görnyed, az felé se nézve, hümget.
Az úritök fején verejték-glória:
Most ő is segített nagy szövetségesünknek.

A jelzőlámpa már pirosból zöldre vált.
Az úr még hadonász hebegve és hadarva.
Barbár, de csöndes és zárt és civilizált
Szigorral néz a tiszt a hevülő magyarra.

S míg teuto-nordikus gőggel a barna eb
Visszatekint, az úr még ott mered makogva.
Felhők mögül a nap már egyre melegebb
S tört, sárga fénye süt a sárga csillagokra.

S a fogcsikorgatás, a kín, a döghalál,
Szóval a huszadik Krisztus-utáni század
Vad szívverése egy pillanatig megáll.
Rikkancs fut. Nagy betűk. Hajnalban partra szálltak.

The colours that day (Angol)

The soldier is tanned and blond, his car and tunic green.
His silken hound is brown and bright and cheerful.
Bound from Paris to Moscow, stranded here,
he regards our streets with mild but blatant loathing.

The traffic light turns red. The vehicle must stop.
The driver sighs, looks blank. His thoughts race far away.
A gent approaches, pandering to the German,
his balding bloated head aglow with zeal.

He speaks too loud: “Sie fahren nach Astoria?...”
He asks with feeling. But he is ignored.
He is bent to the window, his brow haloed in sweat,
proud to serve our grand and glorious ally.

The light has turned again to amber and to green.
The gent attending to the German fails to notice.
He waves his arms about, eliciting
impatient, disapproving reservation.

From the parting car, the hound still holds
our friendly guide in keen, Teutonic gaze.
The sun breaks through. Its yellow rays ignite
the identifying Yellow Stars Jews must display.

For a moment, the murder, the pain, the fear that smear
this, our 20th century after Jesus... and
even its savage heartbeat are suspended.
A newsboy cries out: “Normandy, Hey!They’ve landed.

The author, a descendent of generations of provincial rabbis, converted to Christianity and survived the Holocaust by hiding with friends. This enabled him to record in poetic eye-witness accounts the events of the Nazi rule in Budapest, including the deportation of his own mother to a place of mass murder. This translation appears in Survivors: Hungarian Jewish Poets of the Holocaust translated and edited by Thomas Ország-Land (Smokestack Books, England, 2014).
