Vas István: A süketnéma kislány

Vas István portréja

A süketnéma kislány (Magyar)

Sok volt a gyerek a szőlőhegyen
A kőkunyhók, sziklák, tőkék között,
Szépek voltak, erősek, kedvesek,
És eleinte nem is vettem észre,
Hogy nem szólal, csak szebb a többinél.
Nem, eleinte nem tudtam, mitől
A komolyság nagy, sűrűkék szemében,
Hogy mosolygása mitől telített,
Nem tudtam, hogy a természet kegyetlen,
Kanyargó árama mit alakított
Mivé, nemcsak a kicsi koponyában,
De tökéletes teste minden apró
Izmában úgy, hogy ötéves korára
Megérjen benne, amit nagy színésznők
tudnak csak felmagasult perceikben,
És homlokig maszatosan, mezítláb,
Minden nézése jelentős legyen,
Minden mozgása rögtön több magánál:
Szépséggé nőtt emberi kapcsolat.
Ó, milyen volt a mosolya! Akárcsak
a kihűlt láva-táj szüret előtti,
Kínálkozó, önfeledt ragyogása,
A földi boldogság ígérete.
Kérdő szeme, kérdőn kinyújtott újja
sem volt már gyermeki, hanem a minden
Titok előtt fájó kiváncsiság.
Ha nemet intett, maga a titok,
A szerelem volt, az elérhetetlen,
A nemet mondva is fájdalmas, édes,
Minden, amit az élet megtagad,
A meg kell halni termékeny tudása.
És az igen! ahogy valakihez
Odaszaladt, kezét kezembe adta,
Tekintete, a nyílt, a védtelen,
Ajándék volt, biztonság, bizalom,
Hogy ember és ember közt van remény.
És búcsúzása! Állt a poros úton,
A Balaton fölött, sziklák alatt,
Körülötte a táj, melyből kinőtt,
A hegyoldalba bújt kis ház, ahol
Megszületett, család, sövény, kutya,
És gyönyörű kezével mintha az
Idő maga, a visszahozhatatlan
Intene még utólszor. És nekem
Több volt, mint mögötte Szigliget
Hegyén a várrom, fönt a gyűrt bazalt,
Mellette a bástyázott teraszok,
Több, mint a szőlőlevelek közé
Bújt, tömör, sárga fürtök, mert nekem
Te vagy legtöbb, természetből kinőtt
Természeten, fájdalmon, pusztuláson
Túlnövő lélek. Nekem a világ
Értelme csak te vagy, emberi szépség!

The deaf mute girl (Angol)

Between the stone huts on the vineyard hill
of vines and boulders many children played,
children of charm and beauty and of strength.
At first I did not notice that she spoke
no word, but that she was more beautiful
than all the others, nor could I surmise
what caused the earnestness in her big eyes,
deep blue, or what had shaped her warming smile,
what cruel, twisting turn of nature made
this wonder not alone of sculptured head
but every tiny sinew which, at five,
already reached that rare maturity
great actresses display in their sublime
triumphant moments; why, up to her forehead
in dirt, barefooted, every glance of hers
should be significant and every move
she made should bear a grace more than itself,
as if some human link had blossomed bare
in beauty only. What her smile was like!
It had the dazzle of the cool landscape
of lava origin before the grape
was harvested, with all its promises
of earthy giving and of happiness.
Her questioning eyes, her querying finger stretched
no more were childlike, curiosity
painful and faced with all the mysteries,
so that, when she would signal no, it was
she who was mystery and love itself,
the unattainable, still aching-sweet
and in her no all that our life denies,
even the fruitful knowledge: “we must die!”
And as she ran to someone with her yes!
as she would put her little hand in mine
her gaze, so open and so vulnerable
was as a gift of surety and trust
that hope still lived between two humans so.
And her goodbye! She stood there in the road
above Lake Balaton beneath the rocks,
the landscape all around from which she grew,
her house behind her nestling in its hill,
her family, her dog - her lovely hand
waving as if it hoped that Time itself
the irregainable could be retained!
For me this was far more than sparkling bay
or castle ruin crumbling at the top
of fabled Szigliget, more than the full
grape clusters hidden by protecting leaves
where crumpled basalt marked the terraces
between the vineleaves. Lovely spirit grown,
for me you are attainment, nature's own
grown beyond nature and beyond the pain
of its destruction, gathered in your being
the meaning of the world, its fuller sense
of beauty, born of all humanity.
