Ady Endre: Coming of the Lord (Az Úr érkezése in English)

Az Úr érkezése (Hungarian)

Mikor elhagytak,
Mikor a lelkem roskadozva vittem,
Csöndesen és váratlanul
Átölelt az Isten.

Nem harsonával,
Hanem jött néma, igaz öleléssel,
Nem jött szép, tüzes nappalon
De háborús éjjel.

És megvakultak
Hiú szemeim. Meghalt ifjúságom,
De őt, a fényest, nagyszerűt,
Mindörökre látom.

Coming of the Lord (English)

When I was cast out,
When I carried my soul, stumbling weakly,
Quietly and unexpected
The Lord did embrace me.

Silently he came,
Without brass herald, with arms open, earnest,
Not by daylight’s blazing luster,
By night’s howling tempest.

And I lost the light
Of my two vain eyes. Died, my youth’s callow ways,
But him, the grand, the glorious,
I shall see him always.
