József Attila: Be still, sleep nicely now. (Szép csöndesen aludj in English)

Portre of József Attila
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Szép csöndesen aludj (Hungarian)

Szép este van. Szép csöndesen aludj.

Szomszédjaim is lefeküsznek már.

Az uccakövezők is elballagtak.

Messze-tisztán csengett a kő.

Meg a kalapács

Meg az ucca

S most csönd van.

Régen volt amikor láttalak.

Dolgos két karod is oly hűs

Mint ez a nagy csöndű folyó.

Nem is csobog csak lassan elmegy.

Oly lassan hogy elalusznak mellette a fák

Aztán a halak

A csillagok is.

És én egészen egyedül maradok.

Fáradt vagyok sokat is dolgoztam

Én is elalszom majd.

Szép csöndesen aludj.

Bizonyosan te is szomorú vagy

Azért vagyok én is szomorú.

Csönd van

A virágok most megbocsátanak.

Be still, sleep nicely now. (English)

This evening's nice. Be still, sleep nicely now.

My neighbours will be going off to sleep, too.

Those who laid the cobbles also ambled off.

Clear and far-off that ringing of the stone was.

And the hammers’

And the street's

And now there’s silence.

Long time since I had seen you last.

So cool your busy arms are

Like this river of great silence,

No babbling even, just slowly flowing by.

So slowly that the trees beside it slumber.

Then the fish,

The stars as well.

And I'll be quite alone.

I’m tired, had worked a lot.

I, too, will fall asleep.

Be still, sleep nicely now.

Must be, you’re sad as well

That’s why I, too, am sad.

There's silence,

The flowers now forgive.
