József Attila: My God (Istenem in English)

Portre of József Attila

Back to the translator

Istenem (Hungarian)

Dolgaim elől rejtegetlek,

Istenem, én nagyon szeretlek.

Ha rikkancs volna mesterséged,

segítnék kiabálni néked.

Hogyha meg szántóvető lennél,

segítnék akkor is mindennél.

A lovaidat is szeretném

és szépen, okosan vezetném.

Vagy inkább ekeszarvat fogva

szántanék én is a nyomodba,

a szikre figyelnék, hogy ottan

a vasat még mélyebbre nyomjam.

Ha csősz volnál, hogy óvd a sarjat,

én zavarnám a fele varjat.

S bármi efféle volna munkád,

velem azt soha meg nem unnád.

Ha nevetnél, én is örülnék,

vacsora után melléd ülnék,

pipámat egy kicsit elkérnéd

s én hosszan, mindent elbeszélnék.

My God (English)

I hide you from the things that I do,

my God, how great is my love for you.

If daily papers you were selling

I would assist you with the yelling.

Were you a ploughman I'd give a hand

with all you need do upon the land.

Your horses, too, would be dear to me,

I would be leading them carefully.

Or maybe take the plough-tail in hand,

and follow your farrow, plough the land

watch for where the soda taints begin

and push the steel blade much deeper in.

If you were hayward, I'd hang about,

chase half the crows from the tender sprout.

Whatever your duties on the ground,

you'd never be bored with me around.

If you were laughing I would laugh, too,

after our supper I'd sit by you,

for a bit you'd borrow my briar

and I'd tell all ere we retire.
