Beside the cradle (English)
They say: a hideous storm rages Out there, lightning strike, thunderclap, Clouds cast ominous shadows, and ride Atop the wind’s pinion, bareback… I sit and rock this precious cradle In a quiet nook of my room, My heart bathes in the sunshine of spring, I know nought of thunder and doom!
They say: two bellicose militias Have risen to bloody battle, Drowning out the world all around, save Their war cries, and weapons’ rattle… I sit and rock this precious cradle In a quiet nook of my room, My heart bears an olive branch of peace, I know nought of battle and doom!
They say: of hatred and wickedness This world, den of depravity, Where greed roams rampant, cloaked in disguise Of kindness and fraternity… I sit and rock this precious cradle In a quiet nook of my room, My heart, the altar of devotion, I know nought of hatred and doom!
A shrine, this place, whose sacred threshold I cross only with feet unclad, Beside the altar of this cradle With holy piety I stand: All in this world is forgotten, now, As this tiny cradle I sway, To the heavenly sounds of my child’s Soft, heaving breaths, drifting away.
