Petőfi Sándor: Song of Dogs (A kutyák dala in English)

A kutyák dala (Hungarian)

Süvölt a zivatar
A felhős ég alatt;
A tél iker fia,
Eső és hó szakad.

Mi gondunk rá? mienk
A konyha szöglete.
Kegyelmes jó urunk
Helyheztetett ide.

S gondunk ételre sincs.
Ha gazdánk jóllakék,
Marad még asztalán,
S mienk a maradék.

Az ostor, az igaz,
Hogy pattog némelykor,
És pattogása fáj,
No de: ebcsont beforr.

S harag multán urunk
Ismét magához int,
S mi nyaljuk boldogan
Kegyelmes lábait!

Song of Dogs (English)

Torrential blizzard howls,
Thunderclouds overhang,
Twin sons of wintertime,
Rain drops and snow descend.

Need we care? ours is the
Kitchen's cozy corner.
Our kind-hearted owner
Relegated us there.

Nor do we want for food.
Once our lord had his fill,
His table holds our share,
Leftovers plenty still.

Yes, his whip, truth be told,
Now and then finds out heels.
Every lash painful, but:
Canine bone quickly heals.

Beckons us to his side
After his temper cools,
And we lick happily
Our gracious master's boots!
