A lepecsételt zsidó boltban
még mennyi aratószandál,
baboskendő,pertli, szíj, hány liter
petról van a tartályban,
gyufa, légyfogó, gandli-cukor,
krajcár a kisfiókban, hogy majdnem
kimaradtak a forgácsba csomagolt
lámpaüvegek, gyertyák, mécsesek,
matricák, az egyfilléres angyalok,
hogy még a kocsizsír is a lajstromról
majdnem lemaradt, míg a nyálazott
tintaceruza alatt a lista nőtt,
az írott oszlopok mutatták mi mindennel
lesz gazdagabb Magyarország,
ha bezáratja a zsidó boltokat,
ha a pultot, a mérleget is sorra
leltárba véteti, a romlandó
élelmiszereket elszállítatja,
a magtárból behozatja a boltba
a kismázsát, lefoglalja azt is,
a mosószappant darabra kirakatja,
és átkutatja a házat, a kamrát,
nincs-e elrejtve áru - aztán
a belső üvegajtót zárja kulcsra,
az összes kulcsokat elkéri, beakasztja
a kampósvasat a lakatszembe, a külső
ajtókat lezárja. Lepecsételi.
 

How many pairs of closed-toe sandals
were still in the sealed Jew-shop,
how many head scarves, boot laces, belts,
how many litres of kerosene still in the tank,
matches, fly bait, sugar candy,
pennies in the cash drawer…  goodness,
almost forgot the lantern chimneys packed in shavings,
the ordinary and votive candles,
decals, penny angels, well, I'll be… nearly left
the axle grease off the record,
whilst the list grew under the
licked indelible pencil,
the columns of writing showed by how many things
Hungary would be the richer
if it closed the Jew-shops,
if it included in the stocktake
the counter and the scale,
if perishable foodstuffs were to be carted off,
if the small platform scale from the granary
was brought into the shop and that, too, impounded,
he gets the laundry soaps counted piece by piece,
the house and larder searched for
possibly hidden goods - after that
he locks the inner glass door with a key,
asks for all the keys, puts hasp on staple,
locks the outer doors.
Seals them.
